The system and applications will be based on social networking principles, it combines a carpooling approach technology with fleet management systems providing control and management of all aspects of travel, transportation shipment, payment and more. As such, implementations of the technology will enable novel applications in shipment management and tracking, trip sharing, empty ride utilization, parking spot barter, car ownership sharing and more.

In 2010 The Empty Miles initiative enabled US shipping companies to post routes and find back loads. According to the New York Times (4/2010), Macy’s saved $25,000 per year on each empty route it fills. As such, even 10 successful matches via Same-Way could save companies $250,000 per year.
